01. Come nasce il nome Rentokill?
How does your name "RENTOKILL" born?
Jack (Voce e chitarra) E' nato molti anni fa, quando il nostro batterista inventò il nome della band leggendo in un bagno il nome di una azienda di servizi igienici, scritto solo con una "L". E' stata un idea divertente ma stiamo parlando ormai di circa dieci anni fa. Forse avremmo dovuto cambiarlo nel 2003 quando abbiamo cambiato line-up, creando una band totalmente differente. Ma sai ormai abbiamo vissuto metà delle nostre vite con questo nome…

It was a long time ago, our drummer discovered the name in a toilet, the writing of a hygene service company, written with only one "L". A funny idea, making a band's name out of it, but as i said it's been a long time ago, and after 10 years you don't think too much of your own band's name. Maybe we should have choosen a different name when we had half the line-up changed in 2003, as it is nearly a whole different band. But what can you do, we spent nearly half of our lives with that name, so be it!

02. Il vostro stile attinge a vari tipi di punkrock, creando un suono originale e accattivante. Quali sono le vostre influenze?
Your sound is an aggressive and personaly mix of different music approches of punkrock.
Which are your original influences?
Le nostre influenze provengono da tutto il genere punkrock/hardcore, partendo da band oldschool come i Minor Threat fino ad arrivare al moderno post-hardcore degli At the Drive In. Comunque nel nostro sound c'è molto punk-rock della westcoast americana degli anni novanta e del nuovo hardcore, stile Comeback Kid e New Mexican Disaster.
Per quanto riguarda i testi sicuramente sono stato molto influenzato da tutte quelle band che propongono nella loro musica contenuti politici, come Bad Religion, Propagandhi e Strike Anywhere.

Well, the influences are across the whole punkrock / hardcore genre, naturally, reaching from oldschool bands like Minor Threat to modern post-hardcore stuff like At the Drive In. However, there has been a lot of ninetees-westcoast punkrock, and in recent times newer hardcore bands like Comeback Kid or New Mexican Disaster Squat as well.
As for the lyrics, i was always influenced by bands with a strong political content, like Bad Religion in early times, or Propagandhi or Strike Anywhere.

03. Come siete entrati in contatto con la Rude/No Reason Records?
How had you contact the guys of Rude/NoReason Records?
Appena terminate le registrazioni del nostro album abbiamo inviato diverse copie promozionali a etichette in tutto il mondo, focalizzando l'obiettivo ovviamente sull'Europa. Quando alcune di queste etichette ci hanno risposto abbiamo iniziato a discutere con loro e alla fine la collaborazione tra Rude/NoReason Records è quella che ci ha soddisfatto maggiormente. E' difficile decidere con quale etichetta collaborare, essere sicuri che possa soddisfare le tue aspettative e allo stesso tempo anche l'etichetta non può conoscere la convinzione e i sacrifici che una band può fare per supportare il proprio lavoro. Soprattutto oggigiorno, non è sufficiente registrare un album e poi aspettare in un miracolo. Noi abbiamo sempre fatto molti sforzi per la nostra band cercando di mantenere lo spirito DIY che ci ha sempre caratterizzato, anche ora che abbiamo un etichetta forte che ci supporta.
Inoltre abbiamo voluto che l'album sia stato prodotto anche in vinile grazie ai nostri amici austriaci della Broken Heart Records, e anche in questo RUDE Records è stata d'accordo con noi. Abbiamo avuto modo inoltre di incontrare i ragazzi delle etichette in Italia verso metà aprile e ci hanno fatto sentire a nostro agio e ora possiamo dire di far parte della loro "famiglia".

When the album was finished, we sent out promos to a lot of labels worldwide, with a first focus on Europe. We started talking to some of them, when they answered, and the RUDE/NoReason cooperation made sense to us. It's hard to decide if a label can do the work for you that you expect, as well as the label doesn't know if the band will put enough effort into their work. Especially these days, it's not enough jut to make a record and wait for some miracle to happen. We always have put a lot of effort into this band, and we wanted to keep this DIY spirit, even if there is a strong label behind us.
Also, we wanted our austrian friend Broken Heart Records to put out the album on vinyl, and RUDE agreed with that. We met the guys in Italy in April, and we felt really that they will take good care oof us, now that we're in their family, so to say.

04. La scena punkrock austriaca viene spesso ignorata in Europa, secondo voi perchè? Ci consigliate qualche band austriaca?
Generally the austrian punk-rock scene is not considered in Europe. Which are the causes of this situation? Please suggest to us some bands from your contry.
L'Austria è un paese piccolo ed è sempre difficile vedere molte bands emergere da paesi come il nostro. In ogni caso negli ultimi dieci anni ci sono state ottime band e la scena in questo momento è in continua crescita. Molte band hanno inoltre programmato tuor nel nord Europa, in Germania e UK ad esempio, ma difficilmente in Italia. In realtà non so quale sia il motivo di reale di questo.
Consiglio a tutti voi di visitare www.neustadtpunk.net, una community della nostra zona geografica che stà lavorando veramente bene negli ultimi anni. Ci sono veramente ottime band e diverse persone che lavorano sodo per la crescita della scena punk/hc. Band come "Astpai" e "Dimitrij" stanno mostrando il loro potenziale. Probabilmente conoscerete i "Red Light Flash", una delle prime band a riuscire a emergere ed uscire dai confini del nostro paese, e non bisogna nemmeno dimenticare i "The Plague Mass", che fondono metal e hardcore trasmettendo anche un forte messaggio politico. Citerei anche gli "Epehn Rian" usciti nell'ultimo anno per l'ottima Wynona Records. Infine consiglio anche di dare un ascolto ai "Cretins", che veramente possono soddisfare tutti gli amanti dei "Ramones"

Well, Austria is a very small country, and naturally you do not see so many bands coming out of small countries. However, there has been going on a lot of stuff in the past 10 years, and the scene is developing very well at the moment. Still, i have the feeling that many of the bands manage to travel rather north - e.g. Germany or the UK - instead of getting shows in Italy. I don't know why, actually.
I highly suggest you visit www.neustadtpunk.net, a local collective from our area that helped establish a good working scene over the last years. There's a lot of good bands on it, and quite some people doing serious work for the punk/hc scene. Especially bands like "Astpai" or "Dimitrij" are exploring their potential consequently. You should have heard of "Red Lights Flash", probably the most remarkable band that has overcome this country's borders years ago, but also don't miss "The Plague Mass", the most politically charged, metal-influenced hardcore you can imagine. "Ephen Rian" put out an Amazing records on Wynona Records last year. Also check out "The Cretins" they really deliver what is needed since the Ramones are dead...

05. L'impegno politico è una parte fondamentale del vostro stile. Questo è veramente apprezzabile per una band punkrock, dato che ormai si è perso il vero spirito sociale di questo genere. Cosa ne pensate di quelle band che propongono un punkrock senza nessun tipo di impegno sociale? Credete che la musica possa sensibilizzare la gente sui problemi che anche voi affrontate?
Your style is completed with your political engagement. This is a important approach for a punk-rock band, in these days where seem that the original soul of this music has been lost. What do you think about the bands that play punkrock music without have been politically involved? Do you think that the music is able to open the people eyes about the problems discussed by you?
Personalmente penso che la musica possa almeno spingere le persone a pensare a un certo tipo di cose e avvenimenti. Questo diventa difficile quando i gruppi diventando troppo "grandi" pensandosi delle star della musica. Questo non è obbligatorio in generale per il punk-rock, l'importante è che ogni band faccia quello in cui crede veramente. Penso però che anche intraprendendo una strada politica ci si possa divertire, e inoltre la musica inizierà a influenzare la propria vita di tutti i giorni.
Quando ho iniziato ad ascoltare i Bad Religion avevo 13 anni e sicuramente i loro testi hanno avuto un forte impatto sul mio modo di pensare. Forse però questo non sarebbe successo se io non avessi avuto delle mie idee e opinioni affini. Credo che nessuno possa cambiare la mentalità delle persone, ma sicuramente è possibile far capire che non sono sole con i propri sogni e le proprie verità.

I do believe that music can at least motivate people to think about certain things. It's getting harder when bands are getting too "big", as they are seen as "stars", and not normal people anymore. But if you listen to a band that is presenting a true political message, it can make you think about certain issues, too. This is not obligatory for punkrock music in general, as it is also important that bands do what they like to do. But once you start to experience that political engagement can make fun, too, the music starts to influence your daily life.
When i first started to listen to Bad Religion, i was 13 years old, and their lyrics had a strong impact on my thinking. But it maybe would't have happened if i weren't into that sort of thinking myself. So i believe you cannot change people's minds, but make them feel that they are not alone with their thoughts and dreams.

06. Qual'è il concerto più bello a cui avete assistito e perchè?
Which is your favorite show that you have see (as part of audience)?
Abbiamo avuto la possibilità di suonare in un piccolo squat a Vienna con gli Against Me! E sicuramente la loro performance è stata una delle più eccezionali che io abbia mai visto. Di solito i concerti nei piccoli club, quando la band è faccia a faccia con il proprio pubblico, risultano più potenti rispetto ai grandi festival. Lo stesso posso dire di un concerto degli Strike Anywhere nel 2003 in un piccolo club a Vienna. Inoltre ricorderò sempre il concerto dei Rich Kids on LSD in Vienna nel 1994. Non ho mai visto una band così ubriaca sul palco in grado di fare una così ottima musica. Purtroppo molti componenti di questa band non sono più in vita. Rimanete in pace.

We once played a show with Against Me! in a small squat in Vienna, and their show was definetely one of the most amazing ones i have ever seen. Usually concerts in small clubs where the band is face to face with the audience are more powerful and therefore more impressing than shows on big stages. Same goes for a Strikr Anywhere show in 2003 in a small club in Vienna.
And, in terms of overall performance, i will always remember the show from Rich Kids on LSD in Vienna in 1994. I have never seen a band so drunk on stage, making such good music. Unfortunately, most of their members are not alive anymore. Rest in peace!

07. Vi possiamo aspettare in Italia per un tour?
Can we wait you in Italy?
Stiamo cercando di organizzare un week-end verso ottobre, ma nulla è stato ancora definito. Noi speriamo veramente di poter suonare nuovamente nel vostro paese, come detto molte band austriache tendono a spostarsi verso il nord Europa piuttosto che verso il sud Europa. Vediamo cosa riusciremo a fare, sicuramente cercheremo di suonare in più posti possibili in Italia e poter anche visitarla presto. Rimanete connessi.

There is the pülan to get a weekend booked in october, but nothing fixed yet. We really hope that we can play more shows in your country, as i said a lot of bands tend to got to countries north rather than south of Austria. We will see how it will work out, but since we play as many shows possible, we will definetely visit Italy soon. Stay tuned!
